Job Summary: We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Sawmill Operations Manager to oversee and manage all aspects of our sawmill operations in Suriname. The ideal candidate will possess over 15 years of experience in supervising and managing sawmills, with deep expertise in international wood grading systems, log marking, and the technical processes involved in sawing, ripping, drying, and finishing wood. The role requires strong leadership in supervising technical labor, including saw doctors, mechanics, and technicians, ensuring efficient and high-quality production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sawmill Supervision and Management:
- Oversee the entire sawmill operation, from raw log intake to the final finished product, ensuring each stage meets industry standards.
- Coordinate with procurement, maintenance, and quality control teams to streamline operations and address any technical issues promptly.
- Manage and supervise a team of sawmill workers, including skilled staff such as saw doctors, mechanics, electricians and semi-skilled staff such as drivers, handlers, etc.
- Implement best practices in sawmill management, continuously improving processes to enhance productivity and reduce waste.
- Be proficient in using a computer and programs such as MS Word, Excel. Have basic knowledge and experience on ERP systems such as Tally.
- Expertise in International Wood Grading Systems:
- Apply expert knowledge of international wood grading standards to assess and classify wood products, ensuring they meet global market requirements.
- Train and guide the team on wood grading techniques to maintain consistency and quality in production.
- Technical Operations:
- Create sawing plans, production schedules for the mill.
- Provide technical guidance on the sawing, ripping, drying, and finishing processes, optimizing output while maintaining the highest quality standards.
- Supervision of Technical Labor:
- Lead and mentor a diverse team of technical workers, including saw doctors, mechanics, and technicians, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide training, and
develop skill enhancement programs for the team.
Qualifications:
- 15+ years of experience in supervising and managing sawmills, with a proven track record in leading successful operations.
- Extensive knowledge of international wood grading systems and their application in the industry.
- Strong technical expertise in log marking, sawing, ripping, drying, and finishing wood.
- Demonstrated ability to manage end-to-end sawmill operations, with a focus on quality and efficiency.
- Experience in supervising, managing and training technical labor.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to relocate to or work in Suriname.
